I design mechanisms for FIRST Robotics Competition robots: CAD, mechanical design and machining. Three robots designed so far, a fourth in progress, and off-season builds in between. Next stop: mechanical engineering.
Exploded view — 2:1 reduction
01Design it in CAD
Every mechanism starts as a model: ratios, centre distances, clearances. This one runs 48 teeth against 24 at 20 DP.
02Make the parts
Plates, spacers and shafts go from drawing to machine. Pockets take weight out without giving up stiffness.
03Put it together
Hex shafts, flanged bearings, spacers, standoffs. Tolerances decide whether it spins free or binds.
04Run it on the field
The part I enjoy most: watching a mechanism I designed perform in competition.
